In Deryneia—one of the fastest-growing areas of eastern Cyprus—a new modern farmers’ market has begun operating and is already being hailed as a major attraction for residents of Famagusta, Paralimni, and nearby resort communities. The venue was created specifically for the regular sale of fresh local produce directly from Cypriot farmers and producers, making it especially relevant amid rising interest in sustainable and locally sourced food.
According to the Paralimni–Deryneia Municipality, the market can host up to forty farming enterprises at the same time. Its infrastructure has been fully upgraded with a focus on convenience for shoppers, vendors, and visitors—including people with disabilities. The market is designed not merely as a trading venue but as a modern public space for family outings and social gatherings.
A new hub for eastern Cyprus
The market features covered shopping galleries, allowing for comfortable visits year-round—even during the hot summer months. Spacious parking areas are provided, including designated spaces for people with reduced mobility and vehicles with trailers. At the heart of the complex is an open plaza with a café, where visitors can enjoy coffee, snacks, and conversation—turning a routine grocery trip into a pleasant leisure experience.
Special attention has been paid to landscaping: pedestrian paths, green areas, and a children’s playground have been created, making the market especially family-friendly. Public restrooms further enhance comfort for longer visits.

Investing in local agriculture
The project was implemented with financial support from the Cyprus Agricultural Payments Agency, European funds via the Ministry of the Interior, and the Paralimni–Deryneia Municipality. Total investment amounted to approximately €1.5 million. These funds support not only infrastructure development but also local farmers, who can now reach customers directly—cutting out intermediaries and offering fresher, more affordable products.
Against the backdrop of rising prices for imported goods and growing demand for local produce, the Deryneia market has become an important element of regional food resilience. It enables residents of eastern Cyprus to regularly purchase fresh vegetables, fruit, herbs, olive oil, cheeses, and traditional Cypriot products straight from producers.
When and how the market operates
The Deryneia farmers’ market is open every Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. During these hours, farmers from across the area gather to offer produce often harvested on the very day of sale. In its first weeks, the market has attracted not only locals but also tourists seeking authentic places to discover genuine Cypriot cuisine and rural traditions.
The new market in Deryneia is quickly building a reputation as one of the most convenient and modern farmers’ venues in eastern Cyprus—another clear sign of the island’s commitment to sustainable development and an improved quality of life for its residents.
