A new Public (Farmers') Market has officially opened in the municipal district of Deryneia, providing a modern marketplace for locally produced agricultural goods and supporting regional farmers. The opening ceremony took place on Tuesday, July 7, and was attended by Cyprus' Minister of the Interior, Constantinos Ioannou.
According to the Interior Minister, the project is important not only for strengthening local trade but also for boosting the regional economy, improving residents' quality of life, and supporting the sustainable development of Cyprus' rural communities.
A new marketplace for farmers and consumers
The ceremony also featured speeches by Paralimni–Deryneia Mayor George Nicolettos and Deryneia Deputy Mayor Nikos Lilis. The new farmers' market has been designed as a modern venue where local producers can sell their goods directly to consumers without intermediaries. This approach supports local farming, strengthens the agricultural sector, and gives residents access to fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy products, traditional Cypriot products, and other locally produced goods.
Farmers' markets have become increasingly popular across Cyprus as demand grows for fresh, locally sourced produce and support for regional producers continues to increase. The new market features completely modernised infrastructure, including covered market stalls, a spacious parking area, a café, public toilets, a central square, landscaped green spaces, and a children's playground.
These facilities create a comfortable environment for both vendors and shoppers. The upgraded infrastructure also allows significantly more farmers to participate, expanding the range of products available while creating additional opportunities for agricultural producers from the free areas of Famagusta District.

Part of a wider rural development programme
The project was made possible through cooperation between central government and local authorities. Funding for the market was approved in September 2022 under the 2014–2020 Rural Development Programme, administered by the Directorate-General for European Programmes of Cyprus' Ministry of the Interior.
Projects of this kind are designed to modernise public infrastructure, support rural communities, and create new opportunities for small businesses and agricultural producers.
The opening of the new market in Deryneia is seen as an important milestone in the development of eastern Cyprus. The modern marketplace is expected to increase income for local producers, attract more visitors from neighbouring areas as well as tourists, and provide a new public gathering space for residents. The authorities believe the market will contribute to the continued development of the region's agricultural sector, strengthen the local economy, and promote Cypriot products among both residents and international visitors. Thanks to its modern infrastructure and convenient location, the market has every opportunity to become one of the leading trading hubs in the free areas of Famagusta District.
