The Cyprus Ministry of Transport, Communications and Public Works announced on Monday 7 April the launch of a new infrastructure project in Nicosia.
According to the release, the construction of a modern cycle track will soon begin in the capital's Atalassa Park. The work will take place south of the public space, along Kalamon and Glafkos Kleridis streets.
The project will extend the existing cycle network and create a new route that will seamlessly continue the existing route, starting from the roundabout near Nicosia Hospital and continuing along the road to the junction with Atalassa Park. Once completed, the cycleway will extend to Atalassa Avenue, providing a safer and more convenient route for cyclists and pedestrians.
The new route will be approximately 2.9 kilometres long. A pleasant pedestrian zone will be created along the cycle path, with landscaping, comfortable benches and modern litter bins. In addition, new street lighting will be installed along the entire perimeter, pedestrian crossings will be provided and information boards will be installed in the area. The project also includes a new rainwater harvesting system, which will ensure the resilience of the project to the challenging climatic conditions of the Cypriot capital.
The works also include the extension of the pedestrian walkway on Kantara Street in Latia, from the corner of Argolidos Street to the end of the street, where it joins Kalamon and Glafkos Kleridis Streets, creating a complete pedestrian route in the residential area.
The major project is being carried out by two construction companies, A&C Angeli Construction Ltd and Midsign Cyprus Ltd.
The total cost is estimated at €3.126 million (excluding VAT). According to the Cyprus Ministry of Transport, Communications and Public Works, the works are expected to be completed by autumn 2026.
The ministry stressed that the initiative is part of the government's wider strategy to promote sustainable mobility, reduce traffic congestion and improve the quality of life of citizens.
