A Modern €17 Million Hospital Will Be Built In Polis Chrysochous

A new modern hospital will be built in Polis Chrysochous. The project, which residents of the region have been waiting for many years, officially received the “green light” after a meeting at the Presidential Palace chaired by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides. The meeting was attended by representatives of the State Health Services Organization (OKYpY), the mayor of the Municipality of Polis Chrysochous, and members of the Parliamentary Health Committee, confirming the project’s high priority at the state level.

The construction of the new hospital is considered a strategically important step for the entire Paphos region. According to the approved plans, tenders for the construction of the medical complex will be announced in the second half of 2026, and completion of all works is expected by the end of 2028. The new hospital is intended to fully replace the outdated infrastructure of the existing medical facility and provide local residents with access to high-quality medical services at a European level.

A modern hospital for the needs of the present and the future

After the meeting, the mayor of Polis Chrysochous, Yiotis Papachristofi, emphasized that detailed architectural and functional plans of the future medical center were presented at the meeting. He recalled that at the beginning of September the president publicly announced the launch of the project, and now these statements are being confirmed by concrete actions. According to the mayor, the authorities have received clear implementation schedules and expect them to be strictly followed so that the hospital can effectively serve not only today’s but also future generations of residents of the region.

Special attention will be paid to ensuring that the new facility meets modern medical standards and can operate for decades without the need for urgent modernization.

Why a new hospital is vitally necessary for the region

Commenting on the situation with the existing hospital facility, the mayor noted that the current buildings are in unsatisfactory condition and that there are also specific problems with staffing levels. At the same time, he stressed that despite the difficulties, the hospital today is functioning noticeably better than in previous years. Nevertheless, further development of the healthcare system without the construction of a new hospital is impossible.

It is expected that the new medical center will be fully ready to receive patients at the end of 2028, which will become an important milestone for the entire western part of Cyprus.

Political support and deadline oversight

Members of parliament from different political forces unanimously supported the project. DISY representative Charalambos Pazaros noted that residents of Polis Chrysochous had long felt like second-class citizens in terms of access to medical services, and the construction of an ultra-modern hospital should put an end to this. He also emphasized that tenders are planned to be announced in September 2026, with construction expected to be completed in September 2028, and promised constant parliamentary oversight of compliance with the deadlines.

AKEL MP Valentinos Fakontis called the president’s decision a response to the region’s long-standing needs and assured that his party would constructively support the process so that the hospital is built in the shortest possible time.

What the new hospital will be like

According to the presented data, the new Polis Chrysochous hospital will be built on a plot with a total area of 21,000 m2 at the entrance to the resort town, opposite the police and fire stations. The building area will exceed 5,000 m2, which will allow for the accommodation of modern medical services and infrastructure designed to meet the growing needs of the population.

The project provides the creation of a full-fledged multidisciplinary medical institution with emergency patient admission, diagnostics, treatment, and rehabilitation. The total project budget amounts to 17 million euros. The tender for the development of the design documentation is expected in February 2026, and the start of construction work is scheduled for September 2026.

The hospital as part of the region’s development strategy

During the meeting, Nikos Christodoulides stated that the construction of the hospital is a priority for the government. He emphasized that this is the minimum obligation of the state to the residents of the region, especially considering that during the summer period the population of Polis Chrysochous increases by 2–3 times due to tourists.

The head of state also recalled that OKYpY plays a key role in the implementation of the project, and that the total volume of investments in healthcare infrastructure nationwide reaches 129 million euros.

A boost for the economy and investments

The mayor of Polis Chrysochous noted that even the information about major infrastructure projects, including a motorway, port expansion, and hospital construction, is already attracting investors. The construction of at least two new hotels is planned in the region, and the launch of other projects is expected, which will further increase the importance of the new medical center as an element of sustainable territorial development.

The construction of a new hospital in Polis Chrysochous is not just a medical project. It is a strategic step that will improve quality of life, strengthen social justice, and ensure equal access to healthcare for residents of the Paphos district.
