Modern Seafront Cycle Path to Be Built in Western Limassol

The municipality has announced a tender worth €330,000.

The Municipality of Limassol is looking for a contractor to implement a project that will connect the marina with the new port via a safe route for pedestrians and cyclists. Tender No. 74/2026 was published on August 24, 2026, with the deadline for submitting bids set for 12:00 on September 25. The information has been published by the municipality and in the government’s electronic procurement system. The estimated cost of the works is €330,000 excluding VAT.

The project provides for the creation and development of a temporary path. The scope of works includes:

  1. preparation of the road base and asphalt paving;
  2. road markings;
  3. installation of road signs;
  4. installation of lighting;
  5. creation of pedestrian and cycle lanes.

Tender participants are required to have relevant experience. Applicants must have completed at least one similar project worth €200,000 or demonstrate comparable experience in road and cycling infrastructure works.

What will change between the marina and the new port

The section along Aktea Street behind the marina towards the new port currently lacks a continuous marked route for pedestrians and cyclists. The new project is intended to eliminate the existing gaps and make movement along this part of the coastline more organised and safer. The project specifically concerns temporary infrastructure rather than a complete reconstruction of the entire street.

The €330,000 tender provides for a specific set of works to organise the route rather than the construction of a fully developed new seafront boulevard or linear park. The municipality itself views the section along Aktea Street as part of the broader development of Limassol’s western coastal zone. In the future, the area between the city and the old and new ports is expected to acquire a more complete public function.

The first section of the promenade has already been completed

The works continue the previously launched development of pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. The first section of the route, from the marina to Alexandrias Street, was completed in 2025. Its cost amounted to €397,000 excluding VAT. The project included a path around 1 km long and 4.5 m wide, modern street lighting, and the removal of hundreds of truckloads of rubbish and abandoned items from the area.

An important element was the bridge over the Garillis River, designed for pedestrians and cyclists. It is necessary to provide a continuous connection towards the port area. The new tender is therefore intended to extend the infrastructure already created and bring Limassol closer to having a more connected route along the western part of its coastline.

When the works will begin and what comes next

Once the submission period ends, the municipality will have to evaluate the bids, complete the necessary procedures and select a contractor. According to the tender conditions, the contract is scheduled to begin on December 20, while the works are expected to take around three months. It is worth noting that Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis is promoting the idea of transforming approximately 2 km of the seafront between the old and new ports. The plan involves gradually turning the former industrial area, with facilities, warehouses and other abandoned spaces, into a modern public zone suitable for walking and cycling.

However, the current tender is only one stage of this process. Its objective is much more specific: to create a temporary and more continuous connection between Limassol Marina and the new port for pedestrians and cyclists.
