The Limassol District Administration has announced the completion of a major project involving the installation of 80,000 smart water meters, enabling real-time monitoring of water consumption and the rapid detection of leaks.
The new devices now cover more than half of all water meters managed by the authorities in Limassol, making this one of the largest utility digitalization projects ever implemented in Cyprus.
How the New Water Meters Work
The main advantage of the smart meters is their ability to continuously monitor water usage. The system automatically detects unusual consumption patterns and can quickly identify leaks both in private properties and within the wider distribution network.
For residents, this means more accurate control over water expenses and the ability to detect problems before they remain unnoticed for months. In addition, the collected data provides utility services with a clearer overview of the condition of the water supply network, allowing them to respond more quickly to faults and maintenance issues.
The efficient use of water remains one of the most pressing challenges facing Cyprus. The island regularly experiences periods of drought, while climate change continues to place additional pressure on water resources. As a result, the adoption of modern monitoring technologies is considered one of the most effective tools in reducing water losses.
According to experts, a significant proportion of leaks within utility networks can remain undetected for extended periods, leading to unnecessary costs and increased strain on water infrastructure.

€13 Million Project
The project was made possible through funding from the European Union. In January 2023, €13 million was allocated from the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility to support its implementation.
Of this amount, €12 million was used directly for the purchase and installation of the smart water meters.
The initiative forms part of a broader strategy aimed at the digital transformation of public utility services and the modernization of Cyprus’s infrastructure.
Authorities in Limassol describe the completion of the project as a significant milestone in the development of a more efficient, sustainable, and digitally managed water system.
The accumulated data is expected to enable the introduction of additional services in the future, including more detailed consumption analysis and automated notifications for potential leaks.
As Limassol’s population continues to grow and new residential developments are constructed across the city, efficient water resource management is becoming increasingly important.
