The Larnaca District Local Government has announced eight major projects, with a combined value of around €400 million. These initiatives include constructing new sewerage networks in towns and villages, and completing long-awaited flood protection systems in Larnaca itself.
New sewerage networks and the modernisation of water pipes are also planned
Work is currently underway on Phase III of the sewerage system construction project. The €110 million project is scheduled for completion at the end of 2026. It covers the municipality of Dromolakia-Meneou and the villages of Kiti, Pervolia and Tersefanou. Funding is provided by the European Union's THALEIA 2021–27 programme, which aims to support sustainable development and environmental protection.
The largest project is Phase IV of the sewerage system, with an estimated budget of €270 million. However, its implementation has faced serious delays and cost overruns. It is planned to cover Aradippou, Livadia, Oroklini and Pili. According to preliminary data, construction is expected to start in 2027 and finish in 2033, with co-financing from Cyprus and the EU. A separate project involving the construction of 170 houses in Livadia is estimated to cost around €1 million. This project is financed by the Ministry of Agriculture.
Flood control and new protection systems
Particular attention is being paid to flood protection, which has been one of Larnaca's main problems for many years. Work began on the construction of flood protection structures in the Kamares area at the beginning of 2025. This €7 million project is funded by the Cypriot government and is expected to be completed by 2027.
In addition, plans are in place to install a supplementary rainwater drainage system at a cost of around €2 million. Another important project is the plan to protect the central part of Larnaca, including Grigori Afxentiou Avenue and the surrounding streets. This project is expected to cost €3.4 million, with some of the funding coming from the THALEIA programme. The project is expected to launch in the coming months.
Environmental initiatives and long-term plans
Another significant initiative is the construction of a pumping station on the Orokli coast. This facility should solve the long-standing environmental problem of seawater pollution and promote the area's sustainable development.
The Larnaca District Local Government emphasises that these projects aim to modernise infrastructure and protect the region's environment.
'We continue to invest in sustainable development and environmental protection, creating the future our citizens deserve,' the organisation stressed.
