The Government of Cyprus has approved the payment of the traditional Christmas bonus for thousands of citizens, covering around 65,000 families. The total amount of financial support in 2025 will exceed €17 million. This decision aims to support socially vulnerable groups amid rising living costs and to provide families with additional assistance during the holiday season.
According to the Deputy Ministry of Social Policy, minimum-wage earners will receive a payment equivalent to 80% of their basic needs. The allowance is intended to help offset expenses for food, heating and essential holiday needs, which traditionally increase in December.
Support for pensioners and families with children
Special attention is given to low-income pensioners. Their December bonus will match their regular monthly payment but cannot be less than €100. This minimum threshold was introduced to ensure a decent standard of living for elderly citizens, many of whom are particularly sensitive to seasonal expenses.
A one-off payment of at least €100 will also be granted to families with three or more children, as well as single-parent families. The government stresses that supporting these groups is essential, as they are among the most affected by inflation and rising prices for basic goods.
Additionally, families whose children attend schools in the northern part of the island will receive an amount corresponding to the December 2025 grant. This measure forms part of an expanded state support programme amid the ongoing division of the island.

Payments for veterans and payment schedule
Veterans and widows of fallen military personnel will receive their payments on 10 December. This group traditionally receives the Christmas bonus among the first as a gesture of recognition for their service and sacrifice.
On 12 December, payments will be made to minimum-wage earners, followed by 15 December for those receiving unemployment benefits.
By 17 December, bonuses will be transferred to low-income pensioners, large families, single-parent families, and those still residing in the northern part of the island.
Social significance of the programme
The annual Christmas payment is an important element of Cyprus’s social policy. Against the backdrop of rising inflation, higher utility costs, and seasonal expenses, the programme has become even more vital. In 2025, the government expanded the support budget to reach more families and make the payments more substantial.
Such measures strengthen social stability and help protect the most vulnerable population groups. Experts note that these initiatives also positively impact consumer spending during the holiday season, supporting the domestic market and small businesses.
