€500 Million to Be Invested in Limassol's Transport Infrastructure

Limassol is preparing for a major upgrade of its transport infrastructure. According to the updated urban development plan, the total value of the planned projects exceeds €500 million. The program's main objectives are to reduce traffic congestion, improve road safety, and make public transport more convenient.

The priority projects were discussed at an extended meeting held at the Agios Athanasios Cultural Centre, attended by Cyprus Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Alexis Vafeades, as well as the mayors of Limassol's municipalities. The list includes projects at various stages of implementation, ranging from design and tender preparation to active construction.

Major Road Projects Planned for Limassol

Particular attention is being given to the construction of new transport routes designed to redistribute traffic flows and reduce pressure on the city's central areas.

The key projects include:

  1. A new road southeast of the Agios Athanasios industrial area, with an estimated cost of €65 million. Construction documentation is currently being prepared.
  2. The Limassol Northern Bypass, which will become one of the city's largest infrastructure projects.

The Northern Bypass will include several major sections:

  1. Lanitis Avenue — €30 million;
  2. Synergatismou and Nikeas avenues — €30 million;
  3. the Agios Athanasios–Germasogeia section, valued at €15.5 million.

At the same time, sustainable urban mobility projects are continuing under the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP). Around €10.8 million has been allocated for these initiatives, which include the construction of dedicated bus lanes and new cycling infrastructure.

In addition, almost €2 million will be invested in upgrading Omonias Avenue, one of Limassol's key transport corridors. Under the current timetable, some tenders will be announced in 2026–2027, while the largest projects are expected to be completed at the beginning of the next decade.

New Park & Ride Facilities to Be Created in the City

Alongside the major road projects, the authorities are implementing a program of local improvements to the transport network. One of the most anticipated measures is the creation of a Park & Ride system, allowing drivers to leave their cars at designated parking facilities and continue their journeys by public transport. New Park & Ride hubs will be created in the following areas:

  1. Agios Tychonas;
  2. Spyrou Kyprianou Avenue;
  3. Tsirio Stadium;
  4. the AlphaMega area.

Work has already begun, and the project is scheduled for completion in 2027. Plans also include the construction of a new road connecting Lambeti Street with the A1 motorway. The project is valued at €500,000. Construction documentation is currently being prepared, while coordination with utility providers is also underway.

How the Projects Will Affect Limassol

Limassol remains the fastest-growing city in Cyprus, with its population, tourist numbers, and volume of vehicles increasing every year. For this reason, modernizing the transport system is considered one of the city's most important priorities. Experts expect the projects to:

  1. reduce congestion on major roads;
  2. shorten travel times between districts;
  3. improve road safety;
  4. make public transport more attractive;
  5. expand the cycling route network;
  6. reduce pressure on central streets through the development of the Park & Ride system.

In recent years, the Cypriot authorities have been actively investing in transport infrastructure, with particular emphasis on environmentally friendly mobility and modern solutions for major cities. The implementation of the new program, valued at more than €500 million, is expected to become one of the largest stages in the modernization of Limassol's road network in recent years.
