The Municipality of Athienou has officially signed a contract to implement a large-scale reconstruction project for the village’s central square — an important step toward revitalizing its public spaces. The total project cost is estimated at €4 million, with completion expected within two years.
The project aims to revive the historical heart of Athienou, where the main cultural and religious landmarks are located. After redevelopment, the square will not only serve as an architectural highlight but also become a new hub of community life.
A Project That Connects Past and Future
The main concept of the reconstruction is to preserve Athienou’s traditional character while creating a modern and functional public space. The central square and surrounding areas will undergo a full redesign, including new pedestrian paths, rest areas, and upgraded communal zones.
Special attention is being given to the Church of Saint Philip and its courtyard, which will become a key feature of the architectural ensemble. The project will also improve access to the Church Museum of Archbishop George, which houses important exhibits of Orthodox culture and local history.
Modern Infrastructure and Safety
The redevelopment includes not only beautification but also modernization of essential infrastructure. A new drainage and stormwater system will be constructed based on an approved anti-flood plan, protecting the central area from seasonal flooding and ensuring safety for residents and preservation of heritage sites.
The square will be paved with durable and aesthetically pleasing materials, and lighting will use energy-efficient technologies. Landscaping plays a significant role in the project — new trees, flower beds, and well-designed green corners will enhance the space.

Social and Cultural Importance
The renovated square will become a new symbol of unity for the people of Athienou. It will host cultural events, concerts, religious celebrations, and community gatherings. The project is expected to breathe new life into the town center, blending tradition with modern urban design.
The municipality stresses that the redevelopment is not only an aesthetic upgrade but also a strategic investment in the future — aimed at improving residents’ quality of life, boosting tourism, and strengthening Athienou's role as a cultural center in the Larnaca region.
Looking Ahead
Upon completion, the central square will become a modern public space of European standards, harmoniously combining history, culture, and comfort. The project is part of a broader urban modernization program that already includes road upgrades, new parks, and the development of cultural routes.
Athienou is taking a confident step forward — preserving its identity while embracing the future, offering residents and visitors a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.
