Cyprus will host the group matches of the Eurobasket tournament in August 2025. The island state has recently been added to the list of host countries for the European basketball tournament, which will begin on 27 August and end on 14 September 2025. It is expected that the third group games will be played in Limassol. The 15 games will be played on 28, 30, 31 August, 2 and 4 September 2025.
The Spyros Kyprianou Sports Complex has been chosen as the main venue for this major event in the city.
However, in the course of discussions about the forthcoming games, it emerged that the stadium is in need of major renovation, which according to preliminary estimates will cost the Cypriot budget 15 million euros. A further 250-300 thousand euros will be needed for the basketball teams, who are currently training at the sports centre, to move to another location during the renovation of the courts and the tournament. They will then be able to return to the sports centre.
It should be mentioned that some deputies expressed concerns about the feasibility of the idea of renovating the stadium.
They said it would be easier to build a new one. However, there were those who supported the idea of renovating a major sports facility. For example, the Cyprus Basketball Federation pointed out that the country will receive €13 million in revenue from the Eurobasket 2025 games. This will cover almost all the costs of renovating the Spyros Kyprianou Sports Complex in Limassol and provide the country with a modern stadium for training local teams. Work on the stadium will begin in the coming months. The aim is to renovate the sports facility by March-April 2025 at the latest.
It is worth noting that any company in Cyprus that signs a contract to support Eurobasket 2025 will be given exclusivity in its category. This means, for example, that Cyprus cannot have two banks as sponsors. They will be joined by two institutional sponsors: the Sub-Ministry of Tourism and the Limassol Municipality.
