€100 Million to Be Invested in Larnaca’s Development

The city’s mayor presented 30 new projects.

Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras has presented 30 city development projects with a total value of around €100 million. The report covers the work of the municipal council from July 2024 through September 2026. The program includes projects across three municipal districts: Larnaca, Livadia, and Oroklini.

The presentation was timed to coincide with the official opening of the renovated Pattichio Park. The ceremony was attended by Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Christos Senekis, representing the government, and Metropolitan Nektarios of Kition, who performed the blessing of the site.

€6.7 Million Pattichio Park: Why Was the Opening Delayed?

One of the main completed projects was the renovation of Pattichio Park in Larnaca, located next to the Salt Lake. The project cost €6.7 million. Reconstruction began in October 2023, while visitors were allowed back into the park in August 2026, around eight months later than originally planned. The delay was caused by protests from local residents, who opposed excessive use of concrete and called for the site’s natural character to be preserved.

Following discussions, the project was revised: sports courts and a skate park were removed from the plan, while the number of parking spaces was reduced. The park’s location next to the Salt Lake is particularly important. The lake is part of the Natura 2000 network of protected natural areas, meaning that development of nearby spaces must take environmental restrictions into account.

Which Projects in Larnaca Have Already Been Completed?

In addition to Pattichio Park, the municipality reported the completion of several major infrastructure and social projects. These include:

  1. Municipal nursing home — construction cost €4.5 million.
  2. Reconstruction of Acropolis and Alkis squares — works cost €4 million.
  3. Salina Municipal Park — improvements cost €3.2 million.
  4. Multipurpose park in Tsakkilero — creation of a new public space.
  5. Former police chief’s residence — restoration of the historic building.
  6. Flood-control channel in Livadia — works aimed at improving stormwater drainage and reducing flood risk.
  7. Smart parking system — introduction of digital solutions for managing parking spaces.

Most of the projects receive European Union co-financing through cohesion policy funds under the THALIA 2021–2027 program. The flood-control channel in Livadia is financed through the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility.

What Is Being Built in Larnaca in 2026?

The city continues to implement projects aimed at upgrading public spaces, developing transportation, and improving urban infrastructure:

  1. City center reconstruction and relocation of municipal services. Work is underway to upgrade central Larnaca. Municipal services are also planned to move into the Old Hospital building.
  2. Neighborhood upgrades. Improvements cover the Agios Ioannis parish, Makarios Avenue in Livadia, and the old quarter of Oroklini.
  3. Public transport and cycling infrastructure. The municipality is continuing to implement its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan. It includes dedicated bus lanes and bicycle paths intended to improve accessibility and make getting around the city easier.
  4. New university building. Construction is continuing on the School of Marine Sciences, Technology and Sustainable Development of the Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK).

What Projects Does Larnaca Plan to Implement Next?

Among future initiatives, Vyras mentioned the creation of an environmental education center near the Salt Lake, modernization of the Skala Theater, and the opening of an Arts and Culture Center.

Particular attention was also given to the future development of Larnaca Port and Marina, as well as the area of the former oil storage facilities. These spaces are being considered as part of the city’s broader transformation and future use of its coastal infrastructure.

The total value of the 30 projects is around €100 million. The municipal program combines social infrastructure, urban improvements, transportation solutions, and cultural initiatives. Its implementation is expected to affect the quality of the urban environment not only in Larnaca itself, but also in Livadia and Oroklini.
