Since its launch, the new Digital Citizen application has been used by 10,000 people.
This was announced on Thursday 12 December by the head of the Sub-Ministry for Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Nikodimos Damianou.
He noted that his department is confident that this number will grow significantly in the near future. Damianou stressed the need for Cypriots to get used to the new digital environment. It should be recalled that the 'Digital Citizen' application was developed on the initiative of the Cypriot government. It allows people to create and store official documents, which are the analogue of paper versions, in digital format.
Currently available in Digital Citizen are: identity cards, driving licences and vehicle inspection certificates. But the list will soon be extended. Many procedures will be simplified and citizens will no longer need to carry paper copies of documents.
Damianu also unveiled Digital Assistant, an artificial intelligence tool for real-time chatting with the 'digital office'.
According to him, the application will be launched on 18 December. It will be available on the gov.cy website. The Digital Assistant will be continuously improved to become more efficient and useful. In the pilot phase, it will advise users on issues related to social security.
In addition, Damianu mentioned that at the beginning of January 2025, his agency will introduce the electronic identification document 'eID'. This innovation will be an important step in the development of digital services. The minister announced additional services that will be available to children under 16 and foreign citizens. One of the key features of the new project is the integration with the Greek platform GovGrWallet, which will allow the mutual recognition of digital documents.
Finally, Damianou stressed the need for the immediate implementation of electronic documents in all organisations in Cyprus, as this will soon become a mandatory requirement.
Citizens will need to have an active, certified CY Login profile to access government mobile applications. Authentication of digital documents will be made as convenient as possible by simply scanning a QR code.
