Cypriot authorities and non-governmental organisations have announced the launch of a major programme to restore the mountain communities of the Limassol district that were severely affected by the devastating wildfires of 2025. The first phase of the initiative has secured €1 million in funding and aims not only to repair the damage caused by the disaster but also to support the long-term development of the affected villages.
The new initiative is designed to restore natural ecosystems, support local residents and farmers, and make the mountain communities more resilient to future natural disasters, which are becoming increasingly frequent due to climate change.
A Comprehensive Recovery Programme for Mountain Communities
The launch of the Integrated Regeneration Programme for the Troodos Mountain Communities was announced by the MountMed Institute. The first phase is being financed through a €1 million grant from the Coca-Cola HBC Foundation. This marks the beginning of a broader long-term strategy to restore the mountainous areas of the Limassol region following the largest wildfires in recent years.
The programme is intended not only to repair the damage but also to create the foundations for the area's sustainable development. During the official presentation, experts explained that the initiative marks the transition from research and damage assessment to practical measures that are expected to deliver tangible benefits for local communities in the near future.
Before launching the programme, specialists carried out a comprehensive assessment of the wildfire damage. The research was conducted by the MountMed Institute with support from the Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation. Experts evaluated the scale of the destruction and the impact of the fires on natural ecosystems, agriculture, the local economy, and community life. Particular attention was also given to preserving the cultural heritage of the villages, many of which are historic centres of winemaking, fruit growing, and traditional crafts. Based on the findings, a detailed Regional Recovery Action Plan was prepared.
Restoring Nature, the Economy, and Mountain Communities
The programme includes a range of integrated projects focused on forest restoration, soil erosion prevention, sustainable land management, and support for agricultural production. Another key objective is to assist local residents, strengthen social ties between communities, and create conditions that encourage young families to remain in the mountain villages. One of the programme's long-term goals is to prevent further population decline in the higher-altitude areas of the Troodos Mountains.
The action plan includes seven strategic priorities, 20 targeted projects, and 56 individual initiatives that will be implemented in stages. Each project will include monitoring mechanisms to measure its effectiveness and evaluate the results achieved.
At the same time, the Mountain Regeneration Hub online platform has been launched. The new digital portal will serve as a central source of information on the extent of the damage, planned recovery projects, and implementation progress.
The creators of the platform hope it will help bring together government authorities, local municipalities, non-governmental organisations, businesses, and residents of the affected communities. Potential partners will be able to explore recovery initiatives and participate in their implementation through the portal.
What Will Change in the Villages?
Architects emphasise that all projects have been designed to complement the local landscape and traditional architecture, ensuring that new facilities blend naturally into their surroundings.
In Souni, a modern community park will be created for residents of all ages. The park will feature dedicated playgrounds for different age groups, padel courts, walking and jogging paths, sports facilities, a small café, and public restrooms. The goal is to create a welcoming public space where residents can spend time throughout the day.
In Agios Therapon, a multifunctional cultural pavilion will become the village's new community hub. The project will include a café, event spaces, themed gardens, and peaceful areas for reading and relaxation. The venue is designed to combine nature, culture, and community life while attracting both local residents and visitors.
In Vouni, the historic area surrounding the Venetian Havouza reservoir will be redeveloped into a multi-level public space featuring walking paths, cafés, viewing platforms, an artificial pond, event areas, children's play spaces, and a climbing wall. One of the main attractions will be a 70-metre zipline stretching across the green area, offering panoramic views over the valley.
In Agios Ambrosios, a modern sports complex will be constructed, including an artificial-turf football pitch, changing rooms, spectator stands, a café, and supporting facilities. The surrounding area will be landscaped with new trees to provide protection from the wind, while the complex will serve as a venue for sporting competitions and community events for several neighbouring villages.

Prolonged droughts, extreme heat, and strong winds continue to increase the risk of large-scale fires across the island.
