Why Study in Cyprus? Benefits, Universities & Student Life

Not so long ago, it was considered prestigious amongst Cypriots to send their children to study abroad, mainly to European countries, or, the UK. In the last few years, however, that situation has turned around completely — now international students are choosing Cyprus for their studies and reputable foreign professors are coming to teach at local universities. But how did the quiet Mediterranean island turn into an up-and-coming European education hub?

In our article, we’ll answer that question. And, if you’re still wondering why study in Cyprus, let us give you a few very good reasons why it is becoming one of the top international education destinations. We will also tell you what university to choose, based on your preferences and how to make the most out of your stay.

Education infrastructure in Cyprus

University campuses often boast impressive architecture and landscaping, like the Learning Resource Centre at Cyprus University, designed by Pritzker Prize winner — Jean Nouvel. They feature state-of-the-art labs, research centres, digital libraries, smart classrooms, high quality student services and accommodation.

English is widely spoken in Cyprus, with private universities providing all their programs in English as a part of their policy. Various state and EU-funder scholarships are now available even for international students.

Best Cyprus universities

Cyprus is home to several outstanding educational centres — both public and private.

  1. University of Cyprus (UCY) in Nicosia is one of the top local universities. Its modern architecture and several research and innovation centres attract many students from abroad. For example — KIOS, which focuses on intelligent systems, cybersecurity, and smart cities.

  2. European University Cyprus (EUC) in Nicosia is a perfect place to study medicine and music, amongst others. The University is very popular with international students and is a member of the Laureate International Universities network.

Tuition fees and scholarships

Public universities usually provide free bachelor's programmes for EU students. Students from other countries, however, would typically pay about €6,800 p/a. The tuition fees for Master's programs are normally €4,100—€5,125 p/a. Whilst the PhD programmes are approximately €3,200—€7,000 p/a, depending on the program and university’s policy.

Private undergraduate programmes would cost around €8,000—15,000 p/a. Whilst, Masters' and Doctorate degrees — around €5,000—€19,500. Scholarships are available to international students, which provide grants and fee reductions of up to 50%, based on academic merit and program policy. To get more information or apply for a scholarship you should contact the academic providers directly.

Student Visas

Non-EU students need to get a visa before arrival. There’re two types of visas: Visa C — for short programs lasting less than 90 days, and Visa D for full-time degree studies (renewed annually). The application fee is usually around €60 to €100, depending on the applicant’s country of origin. To apply, one must contact the Cyprus immigration offices.

Student work rights: international students are allowed to work under 20 hours per week while they study, and can work full-time during their semester breaks.

Student accommodation in Cyprus

Most large universities feature modern dormitories with 1 or 2-bedroom apartments. The spaces are limited and the rents typically start at €150 p/month. Another option is purpose-built student accommodations (PBSA) near some universities. This option would typically cost around €300—€600 p/month.

It is possible to rent private apartments and studios, located near your place of study. Sharing an apartment is around €250—€400 p/month, whilst a private studio or apartment would be anywhere from €400 to €700 p/month.

Student living expenses

Here is a breakdown of some of the most common monthly living expenses:

  1. Groceries: €150—€250
  2. Transport: €20—€40
  3. Mobile/Internet: €20—€30
  4. Personal expenses: €50—€100
  5. Leisure activities: €50—€100

Future opportunities

With its internationally recognised degrees, Cyprus is one of the most attractive education destinations. In fact, many students use it as a stepping stone to Master’s or PhD programs and scholarships abroad — in European countries like Germany, France and Netherlands. On top of that, Cyprus has connections with institutions in the UK, USA and Canada, opening exciting job and education opportunities abroad. It is also one of the fastest growing IT and Cybersecurity destinations, offering numerous start-up incubators and research centres available to international students.

With more than 50,000 students from abroad, including UK, Europe, Middle East, America and Canada, already studying here, Cyprus is an excellent choice for your higher education needs. It is one of the safest countries in the region, famous for its warm weather and beautiful sights. It boasts perfect life/study balance and moderate living costs. It is ideal for English speakers, since it’s the island’s second most common language offering smooth transition experience.

Still, some might wonder — if the island’s relaxed holiday vibe would interfere with their study routine. In reality, that slow-paced environment could even be a plus. Why? Because Cyprus doesn't have the usual distractions of a big city, offering you time to breath, reflect and concentrate on your goals — at your own pace.

Starting your life as a student is an exciting step. It is not only about education — it is about beginning a new chapter. Starting this chapter in a different country is even more thrilling. We hope that your new chapter in Cyprus will bring you only positive moments and a world of exciting opportunities.
