Living or Long Vacations in Cyprus - What is Better?

Choosing between permanent residence in Cyprus or an extended vacation on this picturesque island can be a difficult decision.

Both options have their advantages and disadvantages and their value depends on personal preferences, lifestyle and goals.

We spoke to different types of Cypriot expats who have spent anywhere from a year to 30 years on the island of Aphrodite. Some live here on a short-term basis, for a maximum of 3 months at a time, as their tourist visa allows. Someone lives permanently, based on a long-term visa, which in Cyprus can be obtained by employees of local companies, official freelancers, investors and their families, as well as spouses of Cypriot citizens and students. The experiences of all these people have been very interesting. So we share the information, and you decide which option is right for you.

Advantages of permanent residence in Cyprus

Climate and nature

Permanent residence in Cyprus allows you to enjoy the mild Mediterranean climate all year round. The island is rich in picturesque beaches, mountains and green meadows. It is commonly said that there are 365 days of sunshine a year, but of course, this is a slight exaggeration, in fact, and Cyprus can be cloudy in the period from late December to March.

In winter the thermometer does not drop below 7 degrees (except for the peaks of the mountainous Troodos covered with snow). December is ideal for outdoor walks, hiking and even surfing in a warm wetsuit. In February, the water temperature is 15-17 degrees Celsius. In Cypriot houses in winter there is high humidity, with which modern dehumidifiers perfectly cope. Closer to August on the island becomes unbearably hot, and the water in the sea warms up to 28 degrees. Fortunately, powerful air conditioners are installed almost everywhere. But the price of this pleasure is a completely different story.

Quiet life

Cyprus is known for its quiet rhythm of life, which can be ideal for those seeking solitude or tired of the hustle and bustle of the city. Any city on the island, even the financial center of Limassol and the capital Nicosia, will seem like a peaceful haven after living in a metropolis. If you want something more secluded, safely choose the suburbs of Paphos and settlements of free territories of Famagusta - Paralimni, Protaras and Ayia Napa. At the same time, the island is famous for its quality roads, so if necessary, you can easily and quickly get to the desired place by car or a little longer - by bus.

Low crime rate

The island is renowned for its safety, which makes it an attractive destination for families and seniors. Many parents are more than happy to let their children go to school on their own (from around 12 years old) because they are confident that their offspring will be safe.

Education in Cyprus

Remember that in Cyprus there are free public Greek schools and private schools (mostly paid), which teach in different languages of the world.

For many people the reason for choosing permanent residence is the education of children. In Limassol there are several English and Russian private schools, in Nicosia there is also a French one, in Larnaca there are 3 private English schools, and there are a couple of schools in Paphos and Famagusta. The majority of people try to get into English schools, because at the end of the children pass the A-levels (Advanced level qualifications), based on which you can enter the prestigious universities of the world. Greek schools are free for all, and after graduation, children can enter universities in Cyprus and some European educational institutions (mostly outside the island to get narrow specialties, which are not available in Cyprus).

Tax benefits

Cyprus offers very attractive tax conditions for foreign residents, which can be beneficial for entrepreneurs and retirees.

In recent years, the island has also seen the emergence of many prestigious companies, where many people dream of working and building a career. As a rule, the head offices are located in Limassol and Nicosia. Some companies help their employees to obtain a work visa. However, you can create your own company, get a visa, and build a business.

Citizenship by naturalization

Living on the island permanently and on an official basis, over time you can expect to receive Cypriot citizenship and become a full-fledged citizen of the island state: participate in elections, debates, and travel.

Advantages of a long vacation in Cyprus

Avoiding routine

A long vacation, which can last up to 3 months, allows you to avoid the daily routine and enjoy the island life without having to deal with the domestic issues associated with permanent residence. We are talking about preparing and submitting a package of documents for the migration service, transferring water and electricity bills, renewing your driver's license, and so on. All this hassle cannot be delegated.

Flexibility in movement

Coming on vacation, you can freely plan your time, visit different places, and explore the island without restrictions. Sometimes this is enough to feel renewal and a burst of new energy. However, a foreigner can lose his permanent resident card if he is absent from the island for more than two years.

Fewer obligations

Vacationing in Cyprus frees you from the need to participate in local life, such as paying taxes, maintaining real estate, and more. Short-term rentals almost always include utility costs for water, electricity, trash removal and the like.

Variety of experiences

Each visit to the island can be a new adventure, unlike a permanent residence where the novelty can, alas, fade with time.

The choice between living in Cyprus and taking an extended vacation depends on individual preferences. If you are looking for a place to live a quiet and measured life, Cyprus may be the perfect home. However, if you prefer variety and less commitment, long vacations on this beautiful island may be the best solution. Either way, Cyprus offers a unique vacation and living experience, combining natural beauty, rich culture, and a livable climate.
