When to Swim in Cyprus? Best Time & Weather Guide

It's no secret that most tourists come to Cyprus for a beach vacation. And you can't blame them — with more than 300 days of sunshine and some of the warmest sea temperatures in Europe, it is a beach-goer’s paradise. But when is the best season for Cyprus holidays and for swimming here? In this little guide we’ll tell you all about the local water temperatures in different seasons. You will also find out which Cyprus beaches are best for swimming and which season is the most pleasant for Cyprus sea holidays. So, if you're an avid swimmer or a beach aficionado stay tuned!

Sea temperatures by season

Spring(May — June)

It's a perfect time for Cyprus holidays, if you want to avoid crowds. As the sun gets brighter each day, the average temperatures rise above +25°C. Sea temperatures, however, are slightly cooler as the water needs more time to warm up after the winter’s cold spell.

May marks the beginning of the swimming season with average water temperatures of +20°C, which could be slightly chilly for an average beach-goer, but the sea temperatures gradually rise as the season progresses, reaching up to +25°C towards June.

Summer (July — August)

Cyprus weather in summer is just perfect for the beach-goers. Whilst it's sizzling hot outside, there's nothing better than plunging into the refreshing sea waters. The average summer sea temperatures in Cyprus reach up to +26-28°C. You can spend the day soaking up the sun on the beach, swimming or snorkelling. And, at night you can even take a dip under the stars — the water would feel even more balmy as the outdoor temperatures would drop, but the water temperatures would retain the original warmth.

Autumn (September — October)

In autumn, Cyprus weather is very pleasant with mellow water temperatures and less crowded beaches. September usually has warm days with average temperatures of +30°C, but cooler evenings. In October, however, it gradually starts cooling down and you can feel the scent of autumn in the air. The sea water, heated by the summer sun, retains its warmth in the autumn months. The average sea temperatures stay as high as +24-27°C — perfect for those who want to avoid the peak tourist season without compromising on comfort.

Winter (November -December)

Winter sounds like an unlikely swimming season, but not in Cyprus. Here it's still possible to enjoy a dip or two in November and early December. With average water temperatures of +19-20°C You don't even have to be a hardy swimmer. On top of that, in winter you can experience the relaxed off-peak vibe of the coastal cities and enjoy the warm Cyprus weather.

Best time for a sea holiday

The Mediterranean Cyprus climate allows visitors to enjoy the local beaches and comfortable sea temperatures for almost 6 months per year. The island's swimming season lasts from May till December as Cyprus experiences some of the mildest winters in Europe. If you love a playfully vibrant vibe, then summer would be ideal for your Cyprus holidays. For a more toned down atmosphere with pleasant sea temperatures and balmy weather, autumn is best. If cooler water temperatures don’t send you into shivers, you can easily enjoy swimming in Cyprus in late spring and early winter. Whilst winter-swimmers can swear by the perfect local water conditions all year round.

Best Cyprus beaches

South Cyprus has a plethora of beaches to choose from for all tastes and swimming skill levels. In fact, 64 Cyprus beaches boast a «blue flag» rating with clean waters, life guards and modern facilities. Most of the island's beaches have shallow waters, suitable even for inexperienced swimmers and children. However, some of the more pristine, wild spots might have a more diverse and rugged shoreline with sudden steep plunges into deeper waters. For a dash of luxury, you can always book a beach hotel with its own private beach, open only for guests.

Ayia Napa/Protaras

For a vibrant party vibe, head to Makronissos and Nissi beach. If you prefer a more secluded and scenic setting, definitely try Konnos Bay, surrounded by pine-covered cliffs, or Fig Tree Bay, voted one of the best Cyprus beaches.

Larnaca

Finikoudes beach, located right at the heart of Larnaca, is the most popular spot with tourists and locals alike. For a dash of exclusivity, try McKenzie Beach. If you prefer a more pristine and secluded location, you should explore Mazotos pebble beach.

Limassol

The strikingly gorgeous Governor's beach with white cliff formations and coves is surely not to be missed by nature lovers. Located to the east of Akrotiri, Lady’s Mile beach with shallow waters and soft sandy beaches would be perfect for families with kids. Another picturesque area is Pissouri Bay, surrounded by stunning white cliffs. The beach has a combination of sand and pebbles. It's important to remember that whilst the water is normally shallow, there are some much deeper areas to be aware of.

Paphos

For a safe family-friendly beach with warm shallow waters try Coral Bay. If you love nature, then you should head to Akamas peninsula located on the western tip of Cyprus’ southern coast. Here you will find pristine Lara Bay — also a nesting ground for turtles and dreamy Blue Lagoon with crystal-clear waters and uninterrupted sea views.

Safe swimming tips

Always opt for «blue flag» beaches and follow lifeguard safety signs. Beware of rip currents. Always use sunscreen with high SPF and reapply it often before and after swimming, even if it's waterproof. For your safety, always stay inside designated «swimming zones». Whilst there are no specifically dangerous sea creatures in Cyprus waters, it's still good to be aware of sea urchins, occasional jelly fish or stingrays.

Overall, there's no bad or good time for Cyprus holidays, each season has its own unique beauty. The island's beaches and shores are always ready to welcome you and Cyprus weather always delights with its warmth.
