Cypriot Coffee. What Is It & Where to Try It — Full Tasting Guide

When I think of Cypriot coffee, it’s not just a drink. For many here, it’s like the soul of a culture where every cup is a wonderful interweaving of tradition and bold, aromatic flavours.

If you’re a coffee lover like me, or just love discovering something authentic, let’s dive into the world of Cypriot coffee together. In this guide, I’ll tell you about its unique features, show you how to make it, and share my favourite places on the island to try it.

So why not give it a try? I’m sure you’ll discover many fascinating secrets!

What is Cyprus coffee?

So, what is Cypriot coffee? Often referred to simply as Cyprus coffee, this is more than just a name; it’s a drink with deep historical roots. It is a strong, finely ground coffee prepared in a small copper pot known as a cezve (Turkish) or a briki (Greek, and also ibrik in Arabic), which essentially means the same thing — a metal vessel with a long handle, a narrow neck that widens slightly at the top, and a wider base. Ideally, it is brewed on hot sand.

Now forget about quick espresso! This coffee is specially not filtered, so a beautiful sediment remains at the bottom of the cup. Although one of my friends is wildly irritated by this sediment. Oh, he does not understand anything about subtleties! And to add novelty to each touch, a glass of cold still water is almost always served — a small, but, in my opinion, ideal touch that perfectly prepares the taste buds for each next sip.

But for me, this drink is more than just a taste. It’s a ritual, one that many prefer to savour slowly. Locals don’t just drink it daily; you’ll often see groups of friends sitting for hours over a cup of coffee, or someone inviting a complete stranger to join in a conversation over a cup.

Interesting fact: In Cyprus, coffee is not grown on coffee trees, as they require a very humid tropical climate with approximately the same temperature all year round. Green beans are imported (most often Arabica from Latin America, Africa or Asia), roasted properly and ground here to almost dust. Therefore, Cypriot coffee is rather a unique method of preparation and roasting style.

The unique brewing process

Many would say the true magic of Cyprus coffee lies in its preparation. It's such a captivating dance of simplicity and precision. The main thing is don't rush! To begin, grab a briki – that small metal vessel designed specifically for this craft. Add precisely a teaspoon of very finely ground powder per portion — it should be almost like dust. You can grind the beans right before cooking — this is always ideal for freshness. But, frankly, many locals are quite happy with ready-made ground coffee from specialty stores for their daily ritual. Then, carefully, add filtered or bottled water and, of course, some sugar to your liking.

You'll hear a gentle bubbling as it warms, and then see that signature frothy top begin to form. If you want a richer taste, you can raise the foam several times. The key is patience; resist the urge to stir and just let it settle naturally. Once perfectly brewed, pour it gently into a cup, ensuring the grounds remain at the base. The result? A strong, aromatic drink that, when I take my first sip, truly feels like the very essence of the island! This timeless method has been lovingly passed down through generations, making each cup a veritable piece of history.

Types

Variety, as the saying goes, is truly the spice of life, and, I think, the local coffee really embraces this philosophy. With its delightful variations based on sweetness preference. For those who appreciate coffee in its purest form, there's Sketo – served unsweetened, it offers a beautifully raw, intense flavor. If you prefer a gentle balance, Metrio includes just one measured portion of sugar for that perfect equilibrium. And then, for anyone who enjoys a truly dessert-like experience, Glyko comes delightfully sweet, appealing deeply to the sweet tooth.

It’s remarkable, really, that each type is brewed in precisely the same traditional way; only the sweetness level that subtly transforms the entire experience. So, whether your palate leans towards the bitter or the intensely sweet, rest assured, there's a unique Cyprus brew waiting just for you. My advice? Try them all to truly discover your absolute favorite in Cyprus!

Where to try in Cyprus

Interested in trying this delightful coffee? Right here, on a charming island, you'll discover countless spots serving this traditional beverage, each with its own special ambiance.

  1. For an authentic taste of the island's capital Nicosia life, do visit quaint kafenia like Kafenia 11; locals genuinely gather there to share stories, play board games and enjoy their beloved servings.
  2. In bustling Limassol, Traditional Coffee-Shop in Omodos district stands out as a top spot, known for its incredibly cozy vibe.
  3. Journey to historical Paphos, where you'll find charming venues such as Coffee Island, beautifully blending tradition with modern charm.
  4. And if a seaside experience beckons, just head to Larnaca’s old town cafes. I recently discovered a place called Kafeneio To Tahidromeio just behind the Municipal Museum – the aroma of coffee mingled with the faint sound of live music from inside, creating a truly inviting atmosphere. They not only have good traditional drinks but sometimes have live music. Yeahs!

Every single place on the island pours this brew with heartfelt hospitality, truly making it a must-try for any visitor. These cherished locations, I've found, are often vibrant hubs, offering a truly authentic taste of local life.

Interesting fact: Historical evidence shows that traditional Cypriot coffee houses were exclusively male spaces from the 17th and 18th centuries until the early 21st century. Women were systematically excluded from these public spaces, which were considered taboo for them. Modern coffee houses in urban centers have largely become inclusive spaces welcoming all genders. However, traditional male kafenions still exist, especially in the more isolated rural areas of the island.

Pairing coffee and local treats

Ah, for me, a seasoned sweet tooth, the true magic of Cyprus coffee often blossoms when it's paired with traditional sweets. Imagine this: the rich, deep flavor of the coffee dancing beautifully alongside delicate loukoumades, those small, often warm, honey-soaked pastries, or perhaps a luscious slice of baklava, or a piece of chocolate with donkey milk (no, I still prefer vegan).

The coffee's bold flavor really stands up to the sweetness, creating a delightful balance that just works on your palate. This delightful pairing elevates the experience, making it far more than just a beverage. It was originally a cherished cultural moment, a connection to roots. So, take your time, sip your brew slowly.

Making home coffee

Feeling inspired to recreate this local coffee ritual right at home? Trust me, it can be wonderfully simple, requiring just the right tools and a touch of patience! You'll primarily need your trusty cezve, finely ground coffee and a serving vessel. Any Arabica coffee will do, or find a ready-made truly Cypriot variety.

The process is straightforward:

  1. Measure out one precise portion of the grounds and sweetness per portion.
  2. Add the liquid, and then gently warm it slowly on hot sand or whatever you have at home.
  3. Watch intently as that signature froth begins to form. If you want a richer taste, you can raise the foam several times.
  4. Carefully pour to keep those precious grounds intact at the bottom.
  5. Serve alongside a glass of cold still water for true authenticity.

To achieve truly optimal results, always opt for fresh grounds, finely reduced to that perfect powder near dust. And the best part? You can absolutely make this island’s beloved beverage right in your own kitchen, no matter your location!

Why the coffee matters

So, why does this humble Cyprus coffee truly matter so much? Because, my friend, as you understood for sure, it's far more than just a beverage; it’s an enduring symbol of profound connection right here in Cyprus.

Picture this: locals gathering effortlessly over shared servings, eyes crinkling with laughter as they swap stories and forge unbreakable social bonds. The slow ritual of making it, and the intention behind every sip, invite a quiet sense of presence — a refreshing contrast to the rush of modern life elsewhere.

This simple brew truly ties Cypriots back to their very roots, offering not just a taste, but a living glimpse into their cherished way of life. Ultimately, it’s a small, yet perhaps one of the most meaningful, part of the island’s rich identity.

Embarking on a journey with Cyprus coffee is truly to dive deep into the island’s very heart, where bold flavors seamlessly blend with centuries-old tradition. This brew isn't just a drink – it’s an absolute must-try for both passionate beverage lovers and intrepid travelers alike.

Next time you find yourself on a beautiful island, be sure to track down a cozy spot to enjoy a cup. Or better yet, already today try making it at home — a small but rewarding ritual that brings the true taste of Cyprus to you.
