Shopping in Larnaca: A guide to shops and markets

Larnaca, a picturesque town on the south coast of Cyprus, is renowned for its beautiful beaches, historic sites and, of course, excellent shopping. There's something for everyone here, whether it's traditional souvenirs, designer clothes or unique works of art. In this article we will tell you about the best places to shop in Larnaca.

Shopping Malls and Boutiques

1. Metropolis Mall

Metropolis Mall is a large modern shopping centre that recently opened in Larnaca in the autumn of 2021. It offers a wide range of goods, from fashion clothes and shoes such as Zara, Mango, Disel, Gant and many others, to electronics and household goods. There's no cinema, but there are plenty of outdoor and indoor restaurants and a food court, making Metropolis a great place for families. Here you can do all your shopping: wash your car, get a haircut for the whole family, buy food and clothes and, of course, cool off from the exhausting heat in the summer months. By the way, if you still want to end the day at the cinema, Cineplex Larnaca is only 5 minutes away by car or 10 minutes on foot.

2. ERA Zenon

ERA Zenon is a smaller shopping centre, formerly known as Zenon Mall and Debenhams. Each floor has its own theme: by age, purpose and gender. It features shops of well-known international brands with a claim to luxury in everyday life. It used to be the only place to buy a Tommy Hilfiger jumper, but those days are long gone, and Metropolis offers better prices and a wider choice. It should be noted that ERA has a good selection of women's handbags, including high-quality Coach novelties, cheerful Disigual and, of course, wicker, which is always in vogue on the coast. The mall also has a cosy café where you can relax after a successful shopping trip, or sit down and feed your child with homemade snacks. ERA Zenon also has a wide range of household goods and cosmetics.

3. Ermou Street

Ermou Street is the main shopping street in Larnaca. It used to be home to many international high street stores and local boutiques offering clothes, shoes and accessories from local and international designers. With the opening of the Metropolis Mall in 2021, there are noticeably fewer of these. What remains are the most enduring, distinctive and eclectic shops that are still worth a look. There are also many jewellery and cosmetics shops on the street. The central part of the street, Ermou Square opposite the District Café, has recently been pedestrianised.

On holidays, a stage is set up here and everyone can enjoy the work of local musical and choreographic groups. Cafes and restaurants are active all year round. All the big things are closer to the seafront. Get lost in the narrow streets of the old town.

There are also plenty of cosy breakfast places that open at 8am. Fuel up before a big shopping day.

4. Cyprus Craft Centre

If you are looking for unique souvenirs and handicrafts, be sure to visit the Cyprus Handicrafts Centre. Here you will find ceramics, textiles, embroidery and other handicrafts made by local artisans. Each item is unique and reflects the cultural heritage of Cyprus. In Larnaca it is the Lefkara Handicraft Centre.

Local markets

1. Larnaca Municipal Market.

The newly built market is a local landmark. It is located in the town centre and is open in the mornings. Here you can buy fresh fruit, vegetables, spices and traditional Cypriot products such as Halloumi cheese, olive oil and even chocolate made from donkey's milk. The market also sells handicrafts, interesting souvenirs and copperware. Of course, you can try everything here.

The photo shows the entrance to the market on the left. This place used to be the city's car park, but now it is better to leave your car somewhere outside the centre and walk around.

2. Finikoudes Market

This is a weekend market near the Finikoudes promenade. You can find all kinds of goods here, from fresh produce to clothes and accessories. The Finikoudes Market is a great place for those who want to experience the atmosphere of Cypriot commerce. The wet week of Kataklysmos is just around the corner, starting on Friday 21 June, so the colourful market will be open every day from early morning until late in the evening.

3. Aphrodite's Secret Nut Shop

Another delicious place with local specialities and wines. The prices are quite high. But you can try anything! If you have the time and inclination, you won't leave hungry. Most importantly, Aphrodite's Secret has a great selection of sugar-free sweets.

Local shops

1. Lefkara Lace

Lefkara Lace is a shop specialising in the sale of traditional Cypriot lace. This type of lace is known for its delicate and intricate patterns, the craftsmanship of which has been passed down through generations of women. The trick is that such embroidery in the original has no underside, both sides of the beauty. The shop offers a wide range of products: from napkins and tablecloths to clothing and accessories.

2. Viniculture Boutique

This boutique specialises in the sale of Cypriot wines and delicacies. Here you can find the best local wines as well as olive oil, honey and sweets. Viniculture Boutique is a great place to buy small gastronomic souvenirs.

Shopping tips for Larnaca

  1. Language barriers. Although most shopkeepers in Larnaca and throughout Cyprus speak fluent English, it's helpful to know a few words of Greek. This can help with communication and give a positive impression of you.
  2. Opening Hours. Shops are usually open from 9am to 7pm, but may close for a siesta from 2pm to 4pm during the summer months. Markets are usually open in the morning.
  3. Bargaining. Markets and small shops are great places to bargain. It is part of the local culture and you can get a good discount if you are polite and persistent.

Whatever the sceptics may tell you, Larnaca is a great place to shop, with both modern brands and unique handicrafts from local artisans. From malls and boutiques to quaint markets, there's something for everyone. Be sure to take a piece of Cyprus home with you, whether it's lace, wine or just a fond memory of an unforgettable shopping experience.
