Interesting facts about Cypriot traditions

What can you tell us about Cyprus, its traditions, the character of its people? Many things!

It is an amazing place where East meets West and ancient traditions meet modernity. The island's culture has been shaped by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Turks and British, making it truly unique. The different peoples have all contributed in some way to the Cypriot world view. This mix has shaped the modern character of Cyprus, its customs and its way of life. If you have not yet been to the island of Aphrodite but are planning to visit in the near future, it is not superfluous to find out what kind of people Cypriots are. What is accepted in Cyprus and what difficulties you might encounter.

What is the portrait of a typical Cypriot?

It is impossible to describe the Cypriot character in one word. They always have a lot of thoughts and ideas in their heads, so the main characteristic of their temperament is emotionality. And it is followed by others:

Unpunctuality

If you make an appointment with a Cypriot, do not expect them to be on time. The only thing you can rely on on the island is the flight schedule and the siesta. Everything else is a complete mess. Even public transport often breaks down. So be patient when travelling in Cyprus.

Cheerfulness

Cypriots are born optimists, love jokes and can't stand ennui. They sincerely hope for a positive outcome to any endeavour. And how they sing and dance! In general, if you are depressed, go to Cyprus. The sea, sun and interaction with the locals will cure you.

Liberty

Cypriots have no limits or restrictions. As a result, every local has his or her own way of looking at life and will not tolerate being compared or generalised.

Communicativeness

Cypriots don't just like to socialise. They do it with a special passion, putting the whole range of emotions into their speech. When two Cypriots communicate with each other, it may seem to outsiders that they are arguing. Their language is so lively, loud and full of gestures. The locals simply do not know how to speak quietly and rationally. Waving their hands is a necessity for them, without which the conversation is bland and not fully understandable. Even when talking on the phone, Cypriots actively use facial expressions and gestures. This seems to make it easier for them to find the right words.

How do you communicate with Cypriots?

What is not allowed in Cyprus and what is accepted? This is important to know if you want to make a good impression on the locals. The traditions of Cyprus are very friendly. Cypriots like to receive guests. More often in their homes, less often in public places. In any case, the guest will be fed and drunk. The host will spare no expense. Cypriots live one day at a time. But here is the interesting thing. In Cyprus it is customary to enter the house wearing shoes. And the threshold should be crossed with the right foot. In the cities, however, this custom is rare. In the villages, people are very superstitious.

Cypriots often judge the day, week or year by the character of the guest, depending on the occasion of the meeting. For example, in the morning and on the first day of the New Year, it is good to invite a friendly person to visit. He will bring good luck to the house. In Cyprus there was even a tradition of bringing a pomegranate to a guest, throwing it on the floor and wishing the hosts happiness and prosperity.

If you are visiting a Cypriot, be sure to buy a gift and praise the host. But don't go overboard. Too expensive gifts and blatant flattery are definitely out of place. Another nuance - the host should not open the gift in the presence of the guest.

Family traditions in Cyprus

For Cypriots, family is the most important thing in life. It includes not only parents and their children, but also grandparents, great-grandparents and other relatives. In Cyprus it is customary to live together as an extended family, especially in the villages. Or at least in the neighbourhood.

Of course, there can always be conflicts between different generations, but in Cyprus people respect their elders and treat them with honour. Cypriot mothers and grandmothers are especially revered. They symbolise femininity and family comfort.

Cypriots spend all their holidays with the family, and when they go to a tavern to celebrate a birthday or name day, they invite all close relatives, regardless of age. Even the eldest are taken by the hand. How could it be otherwise? This tradition in Cyprus has not changed for centuries. Men are very devoted husbands and fathers. They usually marry after 30 years. Perhaps this explains their reverent attitude towards children.

Interesting fact: large family celebrations, such as weddings, can attract up to 1000 guests! Such large events are the norm, and every friend and acquaintance is considered part of the family.

Religion and Belief in Cyprus

98% of Cypriots are Orthodox Christians. However, by law, everyone in Cyprus is free to worship as they wish. Baptism and marriage are compulsory for all residents. Women in Cyprus must attend church with their heads covered and in a skirt/dress, while men must wear trousers and a shirt. Open shoulders and cleavage are not permitted. However, Cypriots do not usually condemn tourists who do not observe these rules. I think this tolerance is due to the large number of travellers.

Well, that's about all you can say about the traditions of Cyprus. Of course, people and families are different, but I have characterised the general national character as best I can. Perhaps you have something to add to my story?
