Running in Cyprus: Coastal Routes, Trails and Races 2026

Cyprus really tricks you. Sure, it looks like just another standard spot to lie by the pool and do nothing. But if you actually bother to pack your sneakers, the whole trip changes. The reality of running in Cyprus is that the terrain is seriously bipolar. You get dead-flat coastal strips where holding your tempo pace feels effortless. Then, you look inland, and you're suddenly fighting your way up sharp, rocky dirt paths that spike your heart rate before you even realize what's happening.

Best running routes Cyprus has to offer: From Coastal Runs to Wild Mountain Trails

Limassol: Amathus coastal route

Ask any local runner in Limassol where they log their miles, and you will almost certainly hear about Amathus. It’s a local classic. The running routes here stretch along the coastline, and you can make a separate loop with a slight elevation gain up to the ancient city ruins themselves. It’s best to head out for a training session early in the morning, around six o'clock, before the sun turns the surface into a hot frying pan.

The path itself is mixed: wooden boardwalks give way to hard-packed dirt, and in some places, asphalt and paving stones. Breathing is easy thanks to the sea breeze, and the elevation change on the main section is practically zero. The local running crowd usually starts in the Agios Tychonas area near the Amathus Hotel by Loures beach. They pick a convenient spot on the coastal road or near local cafes and hotels, moving towards the marina. Due to narrow sections, it can get a bit crowded in the evenings with strolling tourists, so it's not the best time for speed intervals. But for a light morning recovery jog to the sound of the waves, this is an ideal option.

Paphos and Western Cyprus: From the Promenade to the Akamas Trails

In Paphos itself, the scene is concentrated around the coastal promenade, which stretches from the castle towards the lighthouse. But if you want a real adventure and serious elevation, head to the Akamas peninsula. Among all the running routes Cyprus features, Akamas is truly wild. It’s quite far from the city center, but this is exactly where civilization and asphalt end.

Paths like the Aphrodite Trail offer a full-blown wild trail running experience. This popular hiking trail doubles as a challenging trail run. The start is usually at the Baths of Aphrodite, followed by a long climb with an elevation gain of about 350 meters. You will have to descend over rocky sections, so coordination is everything here. The views of the Blue Lagoon from the top more than make up for the heavy breathing and burning calves.

Mountain Coolness: Troodos Trails

When the asphalt melts on the coast in July and August, the athletic community migrates to the mountain regions. Troodos is a true salvation for running in Cyprus. Pine forests, dense shade, and air temperatures consistently 10–12 degrees lower than in the coastal cities make all the difference.

The Artemis Trail offers a circular route of about 7 kilometers at an altitude of over 1800 meters above sea level. This is a great opportunity to try high-altitude training, while the path itself is considered relatively easy, without sharp elevation changes. The surface here is mostly dirt and rocky in places, so for a comfortable outing, it's better to choose trail shoes with good grip.

Trail Running in Cyprus: What You Need to Know in Advance

If you want to experience authentic running in Cyprus outside the paved zones, you will have to take into account the harsh specifics of the terrain. Cypriot rocks are very sharp, and the soil in summer is dry and dusty. After your very first mountain session, your sneakers and socks are guaranteed to change color to grey-yellow, and washing this dust out will be a real chore.

When it comes to running in Cyprus, safety is not an empty word either. When mapping out new running routes Cyprus has hidden away from civilization, be sure to download offline maps to your sports watch or phone. Specialized apps and trail maps will help you not get lost in the web of goat paths, of which there are hundreds in the Machairas forest or Troodos itself. And always keep in mind the probability of meeting local shepherd dogs in remote mountain villages — they are doing their job and can be quite unfriendly to uninvited guests. Exploring these running trails requires respect for the local environment.

Who to Run With: Local Run Clubs

Logging kilometers alone is not for everyone, especially when your training plan calls for a boring two-hour long run. Over the past few years, a very tight-knit and active community dedicated to running in Cyprus has formed on the island.

From official associations like the Paphos Running Club to informal morning expat hangouts in Nicosia, you can find a group matching your comfortable pace literally in a couple of clicks on social networks. After a workout, locals have an unspoken tradition: instead of going home, they drink cold freddo espresso in the nearest coffee shop, discussing plans for the season. This is a great way to make useful contacts on the island.

Spoiler: we will prepare a detailed list of active clubs with their regular training schedules and locations in one of our upcoming articles so you can easily find "your people."

Race Calendar: Cyprus races 2026

The competitive season on the island is strictly tied to climatic conditions. In the hottest months, there are significantly fewer large daytime road Cyprus races, and organizers increasingly choose an evening format (for example, night events like Running Under The Moon in August or Livadia Night Run in September). This time is mostly spent on boring base building and gym conditioning.

But from November to April, the schedule of Cyprus races becomes noticeably denser. November traditionally opens with the massive Radisson Blu marathon in Larnaca. March brings the famous XM Limassol Marathon, a staple among Cyprus races, gathering thousands of participants from all over Europe thanks to its completely flat and fast course. Special mention goes to the cozy local trail run events, where the atmosphere is almost homey, and at the finish line, instead of synthetic isotonic drinks, volunteers might offer you fresh local oranges.

As with the clubs, a detailed calendar of Cyprus races deserves a separate dedicated breakdown — stay tuned, we will soon release a full guide with all the dates.

The Climate Challenge: How to Train in the Heat

The summer months test athletes' endurance. If your vacation, relocation, or training camp falls during this time, your usual schedule will have to be ruthlessly broken. Anyone focused on running in Cyprus knows this rule well.

First, timing is everything. The active window in summer closes at 7:30 AM maximum. After that, the sun starts blazing so hard that your heart rate spikes even on an easy jog. Evening workouts (after 7:30 PM) save you from direct UV rays, but due to the proximity of the sea, the humidity in the evening goes off the charts — you will be sweating as if in a hammam, losing liters of fluids.

Second, hydration. Going out for even 8–10 kilometers without water in summer is an unjustified risk on most running routes Cyprus offers. Be sure to take flasks with you or plan your route so that it passes by kiosks or municipal drinking fountains (there are many on the promenades). Experienced athletes actively use salt tablets to compensate for mineral loss. And, of course, sunscreen (SPF 50) plus sports sunglasses are not a fashion accessory here, but a basic element of your gear.

Larnaca: The Perfect Base for Running Tourism

Many athletes, flying in for competitions or independent training camps, choose Larnaca as their location. This city has serious advantages: the airport is in close proximity, and the terrain around is absolutely flat, which is ideal for speed and tempo workouts.

The paths and dirt sections around the Larnaca Salt Lake are excellent for relaxed, long-distance running in Cyprus. In winter, you can log miles here with a luxurious view of pink flamingos and the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque. [Route link]

And the Finikoudes promenade and the long path along Mackenzie beach are a great option for asphalt intervals. [Route link]

If you are planning a trip for the 2026 season, we recommend planning your logistics and daily life in advance. For athletes, it is always more convenient to rent full-fledged apartments rather than a hotel room. Having your own kitchen for preparing proper carbohydrate-rich dinners before starts and a washing machine for the daily washing of sweaty gear will be very handy. To find a comfortable accommodation option, check out the top apartments for rent in Larnaca — it is an excellent starting point for your Cyprus running adventures. Whether you prefer an easy morning run, exploring mountain trails, or hitting a fast asphalt route, booking one of these top spots ensures you have the perfect base for all your island runs. It's the best way to elevate your running experience.
