Cypriots are known as a somewhat disorganised, freedom-loving and workaholic people. When it comes to holidays, however, everything is clear, precise and perfect. Outdoor recreation is particularly well organised. In Limassol you can have a picnic all year round! Luckily the weather allows it. But of course it is better from March to November. During these months the chance of getting caught in the rain is reduced to zero. Today I want to tell you where in the city and its environs you can find a free, cosy and green place to set up a 'glade', lie on a blanket with a blade of grass between your teeth and not get fined.
Eucalyptus grove in Dasoudi
Dasoudi Park is one of the most popular picnic spots on the Limassol coast. It is a wide strip of green along the sea, lined with large and small eucalyptus trees that create a pleasant atmosphere even in the hottest weather. The eucalyptus grove in Dasoudi has a playground, benches and places for active games. Thanks to its proximity to the beach, you can easily combine a picnic with a swim or a walk along the coast. The main thing is to remember to clean up after yourself, as some holidaymakers leave piles of rubbish behind.
Molos Park
Everyone knows Molos Park. It is the calling card of Limassol. Located along a long promenade, it is a real green oasis in the city centre. Its convenient location, beautiful sea views and well-kept grounds make it an ideal place for a picnic with family or friends. One of the main advantages of the park is its accessibility. You can get here either by car or on foot from any part of the city.
Moreover, Molos is not only a green area, but also a popular cultural space, where various events, music concerts, fairs and sports competitions are often held. So, apart from the picnic itself, you can find yourself in the epicentre of the city's cultural life.
Limassol Municipal Park
Limassol Municipal Park is one of the oldest and most popular recreational areas for both residents and tourists. It is located in the city centre, close to the sea and the main attractions. Here you can get away from the hustle and bustle and spend a day in nature. A picnic in the Limassol Municipal Park is a great opportunity to enjoy the peace and beauty of the surrounding nature while staying within the city limits. The best time to picnic in the Municipal Park is in the morning or evening hours, when the sun is not so hot and the air is cooler. Green lawns, well-kept avenues, tall palm trees, modern playgrounds and the proximity of the zoo make this the ideal place for a family holiday.
Germasogeia reservoir
The main reason for the popularity of this place: it is the closest place to Limassol where you can have an organised barbecue. There are tables, benches, a barbecue and a few trees for shade. At weekends the place is almost always chaotic: music is playing, children are running and shouting, someone is bound to 'fall down and cry'. But there is a pond and a path nearby that you can walk along after a heavy lunch. There is also a beautiful view of the reservoir from here. It is very easy to get here from the city, so it is very popular with the Russian-speaking residents of Limassol and their Greek relatives.
Limassol National Forest Park
Another very popular picnic spot is in the north-west of the city. This picnic area is, in my subjective opinion, the best in Limassol. There is so much space that you can get lost. On the contrary, there are not many people here. Except during mass events. In fact, it is a huge wooded park with resting areas, a children's playground and even a small café. The main advantage of this place is that it is easily accessible (there is a motorway leading to it).
Trooditissa Picnic Area
A few metres from the Monastery of Trooditissa is a picnic area. However, you will not see any monks or pilgrims there. Most of the people here are lay Cypriots from Limassol. This picnic area has two main advantages that make it a unique and attractive holiday destination:
- The first is the river, which runs right through the picnic area and never dries up, even in the summer. Where the tables and benches are, the river is a narrow and shallow stream.
- The second is the stunning panoramic view: mountain ranges, picturesque villages and, somewhere in the distance, the Kantara waterfall, which is not visible from here but adds to the charm of the surrounding landscape.
