Cyprus through the eyes of a pet — where to walk your dog, where pets are allowed

Having a dog is fantastic. Many visitors and local residents in Cyprus get a pet, knowing that it's a big responsibility. As well as the joy of spending time together, there are also trips to the vet, microchipping and licensing, vaccinations and quarantine, days of training and careful upbringing, and extensive expenses to consider.

However, even a well-trained dog can cause trouble for those around it. Therefore, walking pets freely everywhere is not permitted. Unfortunately, there aren't many dog-friendly places in Cyprus, but they do exist. These include special areas, beaches, cafés and even hotels where you can stay with your four-legged friend.

Rules for keeping dogs in Cyprus

Pets are part of many people's lives and sometimes become true members of the family, loved and respected as much as humans. However, when it comes to dogs in Cyprus, there are strict restrictions — not all breeds can be kept, and owners face harsher penalties than in Russia. This is due to concerns for the safety of people and other animals, as well as the protection of the rights of four-legged 'members of society'.

Licensing, permitted and prohibited breeds

Every dog in Cyprus must be officially registered. A licence is issued for this purpose, the cost of which depends on the breed. For most breeds, the fee is a nominal amount (€20.50), payable annually. However, for potentially dangerous breeds, the price increases to €170. The licence also requires the pet's and owner's details to be entered into the system, enabling government agencies to regulate controversial situations and take appropriate action in the event of legal violations.

There are not many prohibited breeds in Cyprus, but the list is strictly fixed. Owners of such animals risk having their pet confiscated and paying a fine of around €1,000. The main reason for the severity of the law is to protect society, and children in particular.

Tip: Adding certain breeds to the list of potentially dangerous or prohibited breeds is a common international practice applied in many countries.

Rules for walking dogs in public places

Free walking is prohibited in Cyprus, as in most European countries. All breeds must be kept on a leash. When it comes to breeds in the dangerous category, a muzzle must also be used. Failure to comply with these requirements will result in a fine for the owner ranging from €300 to €2,000.

There is also an issue related to cleanliness. Pets inevitably leave traces behind, and the law requires these to be cleaned up. Refusal to do so will result in a €300 fine: police officers have the right to issue a report and collect the fine on the spot.

Where can you walk your dog in the city?

Every major city has special dog parks — designated areas for free play and walking. Here, dogs can run without a leash, socialise and get the exercise they need. These areas are fenced in and located near residential neighbourhoods or green spaces.

Limassol:

  1. Germasogeia: on the river embankment, near a major intersection and sports club (see map).
  2. Zakaki is located on the border with Trachoni, near the salt lake and in a green area (see map).

Paphos:

  1. Dogs R Us in Polemi, about a 15-minute drive from the centre of Paphos (see map).
  2. Larnaca:
  3. Mackenzie (Piale Pasha), next to the skate park (see map).

Nicosia:

  1. Agios Dimitrios Park, between Strovolos and the city centre (see map).
  2. Acropolis Park (for small breeds only), between Dasoupolis and Ayia Omologites (see map).
  3. Aglanja: Akadimias Park (see map).
  4. Lakatamia: on the river embankment near Zakinthos Park.

Dog parks can therefore be found all over Cyprus. In addition, country walks in deserted places are still an option.

Beaches for dogs:

According to Cyprus's sanitary regulations, animals are not allowed on public beaches. This is due to water purity and the safety of holidaymakers. However, there are special areas for those who want to spend a day at the sea with their dog.

List of official 'dog beaches' in Cyprus:

  1. Larnaca: Kassianes (Spiros), behind Mackenzie (see map);
  2. Limassol: Prolimnos Beach (see map);
  3. Karavopetra near Pyrgos (see map);
  4. Famagusta: Glyki Nero in Ayia Napa; (see map)
  5. In Paphos, there is Stiradzios Beach near Kato Pyrgos (see map). In Acheleia, near the airport, there is Acheleia Beach (see map). There is also a wild beach near Aphrodite's Rock (see map).

These beaches are open all year round and allow owners to enjoy the beach with their pets.

Is it true that cats are more popular than dogs in Cyprus?

Local residents adore cats in particular, but all animals are valued in Cyprus. At the same time, owning a dog requires much more responsibility. This is why strict conditions have been established: a licence is required, faeces must be cleaned up, dogs must be vaccinated against rabies and other diseases, and dogs must be kept under control when walking.

Interestingly, there are almost no such restrictions for cats. This raises the question: is this fair to people who spend hours caring for their four-legged friends? Doesn't it also feel like some animals are treated better than others?

Nevertheless, feedback from dog owners across Cyprus suggests that owning a dog is a wonderful experience. You just need to pay more attention to the laws and regulations, and consider other people.
