Mackenzie Beach Boardwalk In Larnaca To Be Radically Transformed

The promenade at Mackenzie Beach in Larnaca will be radically transformed.

On Friday, June 25th, the Cyprus Department of Environment approved a new large-scale quayside project in the area.

Seven new berths will be built at the Mackenzie neighborhood as part of the coastal modernization project. The construction is expected to use Cumaru wood, which is highly resistant to seawater. Cumaru was already used in other similar projects in Cyprus. For example, when building berths in Oroklini.

According to the release, the project is part of the renewal of the image and infrastructure in the Mackenzie coastal area in Larnaca and is part of the Tourism Development and Promotion Plan for the city, which is approved and funded by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism.

The sites where the berths will be built already have concrete breakwaters built in the 1980s. The new structures will be anchored with special metal piles on either side of them.

By the way, existing vertical concrete structures protrude both on land and on the beach, and are mainly used by swimmers. The construction of the berths will cover most of the existing piles and reduce the interference and visual inconveniences due to their presence. Some of the existing buildings will be dismantled, especially on the very seashore.

Since the coastal environment in the project area is not rich in biodiversity, the consequences of construction and operation will not be significant for nature. However, it should be noted that the project may have some impact on marine life during implementation.

Most modern research shows that marine organisms are more adaptable to high noise levels. The above effects are considered short-term and local, since upon completion of the work they will be significantly mitigated or disappear altogether, - said a local authority representative.

It should be noted that the construction of new berths is planned to be completed as soon as possible, so the impact on the environment will be insignificant.
