Latchi to Become Cyprus’s First “Green” Port

A procedure has been launched in Cyprus to expand Latchi Port—one of the island’s most picturesque and promising coastal hubs. At present, a full environmental impact assessment of the project, as well as a special environmental review, is under consideration by the relevant authorities, paving the way for the implementation of one of the largest port projects in western Cyprus.

Latchi Port is located on the island’s northwestern coast, approximately 3.5 km west of Polis Chrysochous and 40 km north of Paphos. Administratively, the area belongs to the Municipality of Polis Chrysochous, which is part of the Paphos District. Today, the port serves private leisure yachts, fishing vessels, marine police boats, as well as vessels for coastal cruises and water sports, provided their draft allows safe entry.

A new “green” port and EcoPorts standards

The project envisages not merely an expansion, but a full transformation of the port into a modern “green” harbor that meets European environmental standards and the requirements of the EcoPorts network. As a result, Latchi will gain a new harbor basin, the number of berths will increase, and new onshore areas will be created for future development, recreation, and commercial activity.

As part of the upgrade, new protective breakwaters will be built, the basin will be dredged, new piers will be formed, and modern utility networks will be created for electricity supply, water supply, sewage, stormwater drainage, and fire safety. Particular attention is being given to the environmental component: the port will introduce waste management systems, separated waste collection, wastewater management, and anti-pollution equipment installations.

Archaeological heritage and protection of ancient structures

The project takes into account the presence of Hellenistic-period archaeological remains located in the western part of the existing breakwater. To preserve them, a 50 m protection zone has been established within which any construction work is prohibited. This makes the expansion of Latchi not only an infrastructure project, but also a culturally responsible one, combining development with the preservation of Cyprus’s historical heritage.

Start timeline and scale of investment

Construction is scheduled to begin no later than June 2026. After the expansion is completed, the port will gain about 184 new berths. On the new land areas, around 4,500 m2 of auxiliary facilities will be created, including service zones for yacht repair and maintenance, restaurants, leisure areas, office spaces, and infrastructure for the placement of government services.

The total budget of the project is estimated at €52 million. Funding will be provided entirely from the reserves of the Cyprus Ports Authority, underscoring the strategic importance of Latchi Port for the state and its confidence in the long-term return on investment.

Economic impact and the region’s future

The expansion of Latchi Port will become an important driver of economic growth for the western part of Cyprus. The project will create new jobs, strengthen the tourism appeal of the Paphos region, and turn Latchi into a modern yachting and recreation center of the Eastern Mediterranean. In parallel, another major port project is already being developed on the island in Vasiliko, indicating Cyprus’s systematic course toward modernizing its maritime infrastructure.

As a result, Latchi could become not only the country’s first “green” port, but also a new calling card of eco-friendly and high-tech Cyprus, attractive to yachters, investors, and tourists from around the world.
