In the Larnaca district, plans are underway to build a large reservoir that will become a key element of the region’s water supply system. The project received a positive conclusion from the Cyprus Department of Environment on March 10, 2026, effectively paving the way for the launch of a tender and the start of construction work. The implementation of the initiative will be overseen by the Larnaca District Self-Government Organization as part of a long-term strategy to address water scarcity.
Where the reservoir will be built and why this location was chosen
The new facility is planned to be built in the Rizoelia area, on elevated land that was identified as the optimal location after a detailed analysis of the terrain. Such positioning will naturally ensure stable water pressure in the system without additional costs for pumping equipment. The designed reservoir will have a capacity of about 16 thousand m3, making it one of the largest in the area.
The choice of site is determined not only by geographical features but also by engineering logic: the elevation ensures efficient water distribution across the network and reduces the risk of disruptions.
How the new project will solve water supply issues
The future reservoir will create a strategic water reserve that will ensure autonomous supply for at least 48 hours in the event of accidents or disruptions from the Cyprus Water Development Department. This is especially important for rapidly growing areas, where infrastructure pressure increases each year.
The project was designed with a 30-year outlook. It takes into account the expected population growth of Aradippou, active residential construction, and the economic development of the region. Authorities also aim to improve the resilience of the water supply system in the face of potential droughts and emergencies, which are becoming increasingly relevant amid climate change in the Eastern Mediterranean.

How much will be invested and what works are planned
The construction of the new reservoir is expected to cost approximately 4.5 million euros. In addition to the water storage facility itself, the project includes the development of related infrastructure. In particular, a new pipeline about 3.2 km long is planned to connect the reservoir to existing water supply zones.
It is also planned to connect the reservoir to the main system through a separate supply pipeline from the nearest network point. This will ensure uninterrupted filling of the reservoir and its effective integration into the overall water supply system of the region.
Why this project is important for the future of Cyprus
The construction of the new water reservoir in Aradippou will become part of a broader strategy by Cyprus to modernize its water infrastructure. Against the backdrop of increasingly frequent drought periods and rising water consumption, such projects are becoming critically important. Authorities are focusing on creating a resilient and flexible system capable of handling future demands.
It is expected that the implementation of the project will not only improve the reliability of water supply but also support further regional development, making it more attractive for living and investment.
