€21 Million to Be Invested in the Modernisation of Pedieos Park in Nicosia

Pedieos Linear Park in Nicosia is being prepared for a major €21 million redevelopment. The project provides for the creation of a modern green space for walking, sports and recreation along the river. Until October 23, anyone interested can take part in the public consultation. The master plan has been divided into 15 zones to simplify the design and construction process. The project will be implemented by Nicosia Intermunicipal Development Projects Ltd (DAEL), while development of the area will be coordinated by the municipalities of Nicosia, Strovolos and Lakatamia.

The project will be implemented in two phases. The first will cover works in the area of the Municipal Garden, Prodromou Park and Agioi Omologites, part of the area near Strovolos Municipality and part of Lakatamia. Construction of the first phase is planned to begin in the second half of 2027 and be completed in early 2029. Works on the remaining sections are expected to begin around the end of 2028 and be completed in the second half of 2030.

New paths, bridges, gardens and sports facilities

The existing 11 km pedestrian and cycling route will be completely upgraded. It will receive a new durable surface and be divided into separate lanes for pedestrians and cyclists. The route will be extended by 5.1 km towards Anthoupolis, Agia Dimitriou Park and Michalakis Sophocleous Park. The project includes:

  1. 13 new pedestrian bridges;
  2. upgrades to existing crossings and the installation of traffic-light controls;
  3. 13 new car parks with protective canopies and electric vehicle charging points;
  4. one park-and-ride facility;
  5. landscaping covering 190,000 m2;
  6. two botanical gardens;
  7. a music garden;
  8. 7 sensory, therapeutic and educational gardens;
  9. 8 pollinator zones;
  10. an artificial lake to support biodiversity.

Particular attention will be paid to sports and family recreation. The park will include 11 children’s playgrounds and 5 sports courts for basketball, volleyball, beach volleyball, padel and tennis. In addition, the project includes 4 outdoor gyms, 2 bike parks, skateparks and dog-walking areas.

For events, the plans provide for 2 amphitheatres, 7 stages, an outdoor event space and an area for contemporary art exhibitions. Along the route, 8 cafés, 12 public toilets and 8 cycling hubs are also planned, as well as additional picnic and relaxation areas.
